Work planning, scheduling and monitoring with the Hat Factory

The Hat Factory provides participants with a chance to apply the many skills associated with the planning, scheduling, and controlling of production runs. This is a straightforward and interesting way to build core business skills. Build it into your leadership, team-building and management development programme.

Skills learned in Hat Factory

These skills include: estimating time, assigning people, planning for scheduled delays (maintenance, holidays, etc.), dealing with unscheduled delays (breakdown of equipment, sickness, etc.), inventory control, lead time on ordering supplies, determining priorities on jobs and cost control.

Running the production process

Working in teams, participants compete in their ability to set up and operate a hat factory. Each receives orders for three different styles in four different colours, and must determine which orders to fill, and how to fill them, since each order is different.

Timetable

The game is played over six ‘days’ each being 4 minutes of playing time. (Total 30 minutes approximately) Before the game begins, each team must plan its work, sequencing of orders, assigning responsibilities, ordering supplies, preparing production schedules and so on.

Analysis

In the post-game analysis and critique, each team determines where it succeeded and failed in applying the concepts and skills associated with planning, scheduling, and controlling the work.
