About this site

The MLR UK web site has been designed by Stuff and Nonsense.

Design

Rather than slavishly replicate the catalogue design, the web site takes elements that provide a customer with a familiar MLR UK face and yet also work for customers who have not seen the catalogue and who are coming to the web site for the first time.

The site is displayed as intended across all such modern web browsers including Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape 7, Opera 7 and Safari. The site also displays correctly in older browsers with patchy support for CSS. These include Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and 5.5.

Karova accessible e-commerce platform

Karova have radically reworked the traditional e-commerce software model. Karova Store leverages a pure XML architecture rather than a proprietary, relational database. Presentation is controlled through CSS and you can customise and extend functionality through XSLT style-sheets. By developing the MLR UK web site using Karova Store (product catalogue version), we ensure full accessibility, Disability Discrimination Act and web standards compliance.

For the MLR UK web site, we have used only a fraction of the built in functionality of Karova Store. We customised standard navigation 'components' including the categories navigation menu and added small thumbnail size images to the 'Your Recent History' component.

Web standards

The web site content is accessible to screen readers, text browsers and other assistive technologies with the addition of separate style sheets for PDAs and mobile devices possible in the future without needing to change the content, structure or programming. Content is also fully accessible to older browsers including Netscape 4 although these legacy browsers with not see the design.

Accessibility

Stuff and Nonsense are unique in North Wales in designing and developing standards based, accessible web sites. The MLR UK web site meets the very highest accessibility guidelines and exceeds those set by the RNIB. Before publication, the web site was opened to critique by some of the world's foremost accessibility experts.
