Quality Jam

Three exercises, one system — a whole organisation on a table.

Quality Jam is Future Factory's flagship: three interrelated Business Mirrors running as one system.

Components belong to specific people and can't be handed over, so nothing gets completed in isolation. Ninety minutes for up to 21 people.

THE PROBLEM QUALITY JAM SOLVES

In a real organisation, the person who can unblock your work usually doesn't report to you, isn't measured on your outcome, and is busy.

Quality Jam recreates that structural reality precisely: components are owned, non-transferable, and needed by somebody else. Teams discover that flexibility, prioritisation and willingness to serve another team's deadline are not soft skills — they are the difference between the system delivering and the system stalling.

It also shows how a delay in one part of a system produces a knock-on effect somewhere else, later.

WHO IT'S FOR

  • Large team events and departmental away days with up to 21 participants
  • Organisations working on cross-functional collaboration, matrix working and internal dependencies
  • Senior leadership programmes covering whole-system thinking
  • Facilitators and training providers wanting a flagship exercise that also breaks into three smaller ones
  • Consultancies building a reusable core asset into their offer

Quality Jam is a composite exercise built from three different Business Mirrors, enabling users to assess and prioritise tasks within a team environment.

Each individual contributes specific components required to complete tasks that are the responsibility of other teams — and those components are the property of the person issued with them and cannot be transferred to or handled by anyone else at any stage. No task can be completed in isolation, so overall project planning is required alongside a willingness to operate flexibly and respond quickly to the needs of others.

It reflects situations where particular knowledge, skill or access to resources sits with a limited number of people inside a system. Its constituent parts — Cubism, Shelving and 3-D Polygons — can also be played as exercises in their own right.

The three learning tools Quality Jam comprises of:

Cubism combines two applications into one package, focusing on interdependence — specifically a participant's ability to share and cross-reference information — alongside the development of support networks, conflict management and leadership.

Shelving is a group problem-solving exercise requiring an initial strategy, a period of trial and error testing, and refinement of a detailed implementation plan; it highlights the importance of individual contributions to group task achievement.

3-D Polygons (Shapes and Plans) is a group exercise addressing the construction and problem-solving aspects of projects, focused on team building and the development of strategy planning and implementation.

Because the constituent parts can be played as games in their own right, Quality Jam is applicable to most team environments, meets a wide variety of learning outcomes, and gives a facilitator three exercises in one package.
